"PCLL is regarded as demanding; indeed it is considered to be the most difficult in the University [of Hong Kong]." --- The Report "The practical stage of legal education" by Law Society of Hong Kong.

Figures for HKU PCLL (2003-4)

A PCLL seminar was hosted last night. The organizer said that last year HKU PCLL took 70 people in total from London external and local CPE. Around 35 from London LLB external and 35 from local MMU CPE(half and half).

Out of the 140-150 graduates of local MMU CPE around 76 were eligible for PCLL and of course not everyone applied. So that is 50% of the class which is a high proportion. So they all got in provided they applied.

HKU PCLL took people with 2:2 last year but they did not mention whether those people got high or low 2:2.

Regarding the top up subjects required due to local institutions offering 4 year LLB programs, SPACE are planning to offer those subjects during summer sessions just like evidence and company law. But it is still tentative as there are a lot of discussions and debate going on. HKU want to make it difficult but CityU want the barriers to be minimal. Anyway it will not happen before 2008.

You also need ELTS of 7 or above. Someone got 5 and was asked to re-sit.

They did not mention about the total number of PCLL places at HKU. But the SPACE director said that HKU will increase the number of PCLL places next year by 36. Contrary to public expectations. I think the government is behind this and universities need money due to cut in grants. No stats given for overseas CPE. For local ones you have to attain something similar to the 76 people mentioned above.
